Why are hybrid mattresses becoming more popular and what benefits do they offer?

Pressure care mattresses come in many variations from the basic airflow mattress to a hybrid mattress which offers static and alternating therapy. Hybrid mattresses have been growing in popularity and being used more in the healthcare sector.

But why? What benefits do they offer?

Clinical

The option for static and alternating pressure therapy means a hybrid mattress can work to prevent and treat a wider range of pressure ulcer categories than a standard static air and foam mattress. This removes the issue of transferring patients from a static mattress to a pumped one or vice versa. Instead they can have the best of both at the flick of a switch. In the event of a power cut, hybrid mattresses still offer support so there’s no risk of finding your patient sinking through the mattress onto the bed frame.

COMFORT

Comfort is vital for rest and recovery and to aid in the prevention of pressure ulcers. Hybrid systems have a combination of air and foam. The cells are encased by foam which moulds to the contours of the body. When the mattress is in static mode the air cells remain full but with the layer of foam on top this creates a soft and supportive flat surface for the patient.

Part of being comfortable is being able to lay in the quiet. Pumps can often be loud and create buzzing noises and vibrations which effect the patients sleep and in turn, their mood and well being. The difference between the hybrid pumps and full air mattress pumps is that they are remarkably quiet creating a more calming environment for the user.

Cost

Hybrid mattresses are a 2 in 1 so not only does it save space it also saves on cost!

Our solution?

The OSKA Series6 specialist hybrid mattress covers all the above and more. It caters up to category 4 in pumped mode and category 2 in pumpless mode. It has all the comfort benefits including multiple pressure relieving factors. A heel relief slope prevents pressure ulcers on the heels and a GEO-MATT® top foam means more than 800 individually responsive foam cells deliver the ideal support characteristics needed at the head torso and lower extremities.

The Series6 also comes with a V-GUARD technology cover which helps with infection control by protecting the foam core from any fluid pass through. The V-GUARD cover is made from a 4 way stretch fabric which means it stretches with the body so you still get all the pressure relieving benefits of the mattress. This cover can be machine washed and will help maintain the life span of your mattress.

The 2 in 1 functionality makes this mattress ideal in hospice and hospital environments by making it easier to manage patient comfort.
