Persley Castle Nursing Home Testimonial
“As a nurse at Persley Castle Nursing Home, I and my whole nursing team witness first-hand the challenges and frustrations that come with treating chronic pressure wounds, particularly in residents with complex care needs.
A resident developed a Category 4 pressure ulcer on his heel, first identified on 31 January 2025. Despite months of wound care, including dressings and several podiatry referrals, his wound showed minimal improvement. It became clear that standard interventions were not sufficient on their own, prompting a review of his care plan, which I had discussed with our Quality Manager, Lynne, and she suggested trialling the OSKA Heel Aid.
On 24 April 2025, we introduced the OSKA Heel Aid – a specialist offloading device designed to prevent and treat heel pressure ulcers. The transformation in the resident’s condition was remarkable. By 17 May 2025, just under a month later, the wound had fully healed.
From a clinical perspective, the OSKA Heel Aid has proven to be a game-changer. Its technology allowed the heel to be fully offloaded, removing pressures that are known to delay healing. For the resident, this meant the wound could finally heal without being subjected to ongoing trauma from lying or sitting positions.
Additionally, the breathable fleece-lined interior of the OSKA Heel Aid supported a healthy microclimate around the wound, reducing sweating, friction and irritation – common contributors to delayed healing and skin breakdown in frail older adults. This comfort was also important for the resident’s overall wellbeing. He tolerated the device very well, which made ongoing care much easier for both staff and him.
From a nursing care standpoint, the OSKA Heel Aid also offers a number of practical benefits:
- It is easy to apply and adjust, even during repositioning and personal care routines.
- It supports skin integrity by stopping and minimising moisture build-up.
- It reduces the need for frequent dressing changes, thanks to the improved healing environment.
This outcome demonstrates not just the clinical effectiveness of this intervention, but the value of integrating pressure-relief technologies into routine care planning for high-risk residents. Given its success, the OSKA Heel Aid has now become a top choice option in our Pressure Area Management Toolkit at Persley Castle Nursing Home.”
